History
The Catawba and Cherokee were the first inhabitants of Gastonia, but German, Dutch, English and Scots-Irish settlers occupied the area by the 1700s. The settlers attempted and failed at farming and were willing to work for a lower wage than their northern neighbors, which attracted many manufacturing companies to the area. Gastonia is named after William J. Gaston, who was a member of the U.S. Congress in the early 1800s and later sat on the North Carolina Supreme Court. He is also credited with writing North Carolina’s official state song, “The Old North State”.
For several years, the Gastonia area was a textile industry hub, but the end of World War I brought stress to the industry, as employers demanded increased productivity while lowering wages. These unfair working conditions inspired many labor strikes in Gastonia, the most noteworthy of which was the Loray Mill strike of 1929. This strike proved to be very successful in a lasting way, propelling the labor movement in its national development. The strikes eventually became the inspiration for a handful of books known as the Gastonia novels.
